Compatible Surfaces, Primer & Rust

Dr. ColorChip can be used on properly prepared painted metal, painted plastic bumpers, fiberglass, mirrors, doors, hoods, and other exterior painted panels.

It is designed to match painted automotive surfaces. Unpainted textured trim has different color, texture, and adhesion requirements and may not produce an appropriate result.

Some painted wheels may be suitable when the correct wheel color is known, but powder-coated, machined, polished, and specialty finishes require different repair expectations. Contact Dr. ColorChip before ordering.

Remove contamination and active corrosion, then determine whether the size and condition of the exposed area calls for primer. Keep preparation localized so sound surrounding clearcoat is not unnecessarily damaged.

Do not simply cover active rust. Remove or treat it first, following the rust-treatment manufacturer’s directions and keeping chemicals off the surrounding finish.

A properly prepared and filled chip can help create a moisture barrier, but touch-up paint cannot reverse established corrosion or guarantee rust will never return. Extensive rust requires professional evaluation.

Primer may be appropriate for larger bare-metal or bare-plastic areas, where additional build or adhesion is needed. Most tiny clean chips do not require a separate primer.
