Can Dr. ColorChip Repair This Scratch?

Dr. ColorChip is primarily a chip-repair system, but it can improve deep, narrow scratches that have removed color. The paint restores color and reduces contrast. Light scratches confined to clearcoat usually need polishing rather than touch-up paint.

Gently run a clean fingernail across the scratch. If the nail does not catch and the color remains beneath it, the mark may be confined to clearcoat and could respond to polishing. If the nail catches or primer, metal, or plastic is visible, paint damage is more likely.

A narrow key scratch that has removed color can often be improved because the recessed line holds paint. Use a controlled brush or squeegee application, then blend carefully. The repair will reduce visibility but will not remove any dent or deformation.

A wide scrape can be cosmetically improved, but surface texture and gloss become more visible as the damaged area grows. Damage wider than a few millimeters, especially with torn plastic, dents, or flaking edges, may require professional refinishing.

Use a fine brush or microbrush for narrow, isolated damage and leading edges. A flexible squeegee can help level paint across a longer recessed scratch on a flatter panel.

Dr. ColorChip does not include brush-on clearcoat. Small qualifying scratches generally do not need a separate clearcoat application. Damage requiring sprayed clearcoat is better treated as a refinishing repair.

No touch-up system can stabilize clearcoat that is already peeling or separating. A body shop should evaluate the panel before additional paint is applied.

Expect the exposed contrasting line to become far less noticeable. A touch-up repair does not recreate a machine-sanded and fully sprayed panel, but it can deliver a dramatic cosmetic improvement at normal viewing distance.
